Since its inception one hundred years ago, academia in the land of Israel has played a vital role, initially as part of the Zionist vision, and later in the establishment and development of the State of Israel. The contribution of Israeli academia to scientific and social research, education, industry, security, and culture, and to the very existence and prosperity of the State of Israel, is immeasurable. The strength of Israeli academia derives first and foremost from the quality of its human capital, and the effective collaboration of researchers, educators, and administrative and technical personnel. Mostly public, Israeli academia is managed independently by academic researchers, together with administrators. Nurturing human capital, fostering leadership at all levels, enhancing management capabilities, and furthering synergy in the form of cross-departmental dialogue with shared information and resources are essential for promoting academia’s ability to face the increasingly complex challenges of the future.
