Israel is contending with ever increasing amounts of waste. Every year there is an increase of about 2.5% in the amount of municipal solid waste. Moreover, the options for disposing this waste are decreasing, and planners are encountering ever greater difficulties in identifying new sites for waste disposal, where the effects on the environment and the public will be minimal.

The Haifa Bay area is well known for the poor quality of its air, related to emissions from heavy industry located in the area, non-supervised combustion at landfills and the use of pollutant fuels in vehicles. Furthermore topographic conditions and the Mediterranean climate impede the efficient scattering of pollutants into the atmosphere.

Reclaiming the Dead Sea: Alternatives for Action

The aim of this project was to evaluate and present different alternatives for rehabilitating the Dead Sea and the Jordan River. In the process, three main alternatives were examined: "business as usual", introducing sea water into the Dead Sea (from the Mediterranean or from the Red Sea), and water supply from the Jordan River.
