The current literature review is part of a work which was carried out within the framework of the Neaman Institute and was ordered by the Technion management. The review goal was to examine the level of the engineering research at the Technion and at other Israeli universities in comparison to the world using objective tools. The work includes three parts which were published separately. The first part of the work which is presented in this publication examines the criterions and methods which can be used for the evaluation of the quality of the engineering research at the Technion in comparison with what is done at this field in the world. The review covers the different dimensions which are used for the evaluation of applied/engineering research and basic/scientific research, the two main evaluation methods: peer review and bibliometrics, and a number of other indicators, as well as a review of the world universities rankings and the criteria and methods which they use. In addition, the literature review focuses on the evaluation of the research impact on the industry, economy and society mainly through graduates training, knowledge and technology transfer, and mutual innovation processes of the industry and the universities.

 

The second part of the work, presents bibliometrics analyses which were conducted on the basis of the ISI databases (Institute of Science Information, Philadelphia, U.S.A) in order to compare the scientific production of Israel with other countries, and the scientific production of the Technion in relation to other academic institutes. The third part focuses on three fields of knowledge: Information and Communications Technologies- ICT, Biotechnology and Aerospace engineering.
