Examining R&D Activity Areas, Infrastructure and Labor Force in Subjects Involving Space

This work was commissioned by the National Space Committee, the National Council for R&D. The objective of this study is to provide data and information to all entities operating in the field of space R&D on their role and the status of personnel and infrastructure at their disposal, in order to help the NCRD formulate a national plan for the development, preservation, and promotion of R&D in the field of space. This work is a continuation of research carried out at the Neaman Institute over the years 2007 to 2009.

The study includes the following chapters:

  • Data on the space industry around the world: market size and budgets.
  • Mapping the centers of knowledge in the Israeli space industry: 41 leading companies in the industry, personnel, R&D activity, and collaborations.
  • Mapping foci of knowledge (75 researchers and infrastructures) in the academe in the fields of astronomy and astrophysics, space engineering, and remote sensing.
  • Summary of R&D output analysis in the field of space, such as scientific publications in the fields of astronomy, astrophysics, and space engineering.
  • A review of activities in the field of space in the formal and informal education systems.
  • A review of space-related activities in the government sector: The Defense Ministry and ISA.
  • An analysis of the trends and characteristics of the space domain in Israel: an analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of the space industry in Israel, future directions, personnel training, and more.
