The Future of ISRAEL - Black, Grey, or Green ?! (23.05.2005)
Beyond its function in the production of food and fibers, agricultural activity has significant potential external benefits, including: aesthetics associated with the green spaces it generates; social contributions in preserving the values of the contact between man and the land; ecological contributions, such as increased water infiltration, absorption of CO2, outlet for organic waste and recycled water.
On the other hand, soil and water pollution result from excessive fertilization, pesticide use and intensive agriculture causes soil depletion and erosion.
There is a clear need to create a public system that will encourage the positive values of agriculture, and reduce its negative impacts.
The conference, jointly prepared by SNI and the Ministry of Environment, will suggest a wide range of organizational and economic tools to establish a strengthened sustainable agriculture in Israel.
